Problem summary
Live TV is more sensitive to network quality than on-demand video, because there’s little time to buffer ahead. A stable connection matters more than raw speed.
Likely causes
- Wi-Fi dead spots and interference
- Old router or overloaded network
- Provider congestion or packet loss
- Power-line adapters with poor wiring
Step-by-step diagnosis
- 1Run a speed test at different times of day. Large drops in the evening point to provider congestion.
- 2Run a test that shows jitter or packet loss; any packet loss can cause freezing on live TV.
- 3Move the streaming device next to the router temporarily. If problems disappear, it’s Wi-Fi coverage.
Safe corrective actions
- 1Connect TV devices by Ethernet, or use a mesh Wi-Fi system for large homes.
- 2Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi and change the Wi-Fi channel if neighbours’ networks overlap.
- 3Update the router firmware and restart it regularly.
- 4Pause large downloads and updates while watching live events.
Check that it’s fixed
- Stream a live channel for 15 minutes at your usual viewing time.
